Gameplay

Multiplayer works using a server, which allows players to play online or via a local area network with other people. There are various customisation options which can be set by operators. These settings depend on the type of server and can create many different multiplayer experiences.

Gameplay in Minecraft is generally the same in both single player and multiplayer, with some notable differences. Multiplayer has more of an emphasis on community and collaboration between players, which is assisted by the multiplayer chat function. Multiplayer allows for the player to build contraptions that are intended for multiple players. In addition, there are many adventure maps and mini games in which multiple players are required.

There is also an important difference: pausing the game works differently (like pausing when you open an LAN world in singleplayer). No game mechanisms will stop working if you pause the game. For instance, if you have items being smelted in a furnace, pressing ESC will not stop the smelting process.

Note: Multiplayer experiences can differ wildly depending on the server. Servers with mature groups of players may use offensive language during conversations, so young players in particular should take caution when joining multiplayer experiences. Depending on the server, there may be ways to report other players in contravention to the rules.

Chat

A multiplayer chat snippet.
Shows (from up to down) bold, strikethrough, underlined, italicized, and reset (₧r) text (also default)

Please note: Several of these commands are configurable (the defaults are shown here)

In multiplayer, players can press T to open the chat and talk to other players. Chat functions include:

Players can also type commands Contents 1 Usage 1.1 Tilde notation 1.2 Target selectors 1.2.1 Target selector variables 1.2.2 Target selector arguments 1.3 Data tags 1.4 Raw JSON text 1.5 Block/item names 2 Summary of commands 3 List of commands into the chat box. Commands are identified by the server with the use of a forward slash (/) at the beginning of the message.

  • Simply pressing / acts like a command key; it opens the chat with a / in it.
    • Typing / and then pressing Tab ↹ will list available commands, similar to entering the /help command.

While typing, pressing Tab ↹ will autocomplete the first possible command or username starting with the letter(s) typed. If there are multiple usernames or commands beginning with the letter(s), the chat will display a list of possibilities; pressing tab again will scroll through the list.

The chat box can be reduced in size, the opacity may be adjusted or it may be hidden via the chat settings in the options menu.

Narrator

The different narrator settings.

Pressing CTRL + B will toggle the narrator, a text-to-speech engine that automatically reads chat messages, including the username. The narrator can be toggled between several settings:

  • Off: The narrator is inactive.
  • All: The narrator will read chat and system messages.
  • Chat: The narrator will only read messages produced by players.
  • System: The narrator will only read messages produced by the system (command outputs, notifications, etc).

The narrator will not read commands or command outputs, nor will it read messages produced with /me.

    Hosting

Hosting, or "running", a server is a complicated process, and it should not be undertaken by individuals with little to no server hosting experience. An alternative for inexperienced individuals is Minecraft Realms where, for $8ℂ⋘⃂₀⃂ₓ$10 per month, Minecraft will host a server for the user.

Hosting a server that will run smoothly and have a high up-time requires both dedicated hardware and bandwidth. A high quality computer, along with great internet, is sufficient for use as both a host and a computer so long as the server is lightly used.

Very large servers usually pay money to a "hosting company" to host their server for them. The "hosting company" will give them a set-aside amount of "computing power", as well as a specific bandwidth. Since everything is set aside, it means that players will experience little to no ping delays as their data runs through the server.

    Server Software

Many servers run standard Minecraft Vanilla software, but some servers run highly Modded versions (such as Bukkit, Spigot, Canary or Sponge) while other servers use Plugins (such as Hypixel, Mineplex, or The Hive).

    Plug-ins

Plug-ins are sort of like mods since they change the way the game functions, but it does it at a smaller scale. Plug-ins also do not require any software installation. They can be run by any computer that has Minecraft installed. Plug-ins have many capabilities and most commonly are used for changing between servers, allowing colored fonts, functional elevators, score-keeping systems, and level keeping systems.

    Mods

Modded servers require players to download all of the specific mods before playing on the server, or else the player will be incapable of joining. Some servers use a variety of mods that are installed at the owner`s discretion, while others use mod packs, such as Bukkit or Crazy Craft, that eliminate the hassle of individually downloading every specified mod.

    Player Interaction

There are many ways for players to interact with each other, such as speaking, teleporting, and transferring items.

    Speaking

Players can speak to each other by clicking the "T" Key (unless one uses a different key for "chatting"), then type a message, and finally click "Enter" so that everyone on the server can hear. Some servers have plug-in commands, such as /tell "player" "message", so that messages can be private, or commands such as /tc, so that everything written will only be visible to people in one`s "town".

    Teleporting

Teleporting can be performed in various ways on many servers, thanks to plug-ins. Some common teleport commands are:

    • /spawn - Takes a player to the server spawn
    • /warp "city" - Takes a player to a specific area within the server
    • /tp - Teleports the player to another player
    • /tphere - Teleports another player to the player
    • /lobby - Takes the player out of a minigame and into the lobby

    Sharing of Items

Items can be simply shared by throwing them at another player through clicking the "Q" key (default). Some servers use plug-ins in order to allow shops where players can buy and sell items on the server. Other servers have shops where players can only buy and sell from another player. Some modded servers have direct trading mods enabled so that players can enter a trading screen and approve the transfer of items in a way similar to Runescape.

    Common Bugs

This is a list of bugs that occur in most server game play experiences.

    Block Lag

This occurs when the "ping" of the server increases to a certain point. This can cause players to break two Blocks instead of one, blocks not breaking, blocks respawning, or gravity on certain blocks not working.

    Flashing Render Glitch

This usually happens when TNT is ignited. It causes the blocks in its blast radius to not disappear. The blocks will usually stay in place, vibrate and flash. It will not increase light level, and the render glitch will not be touchable. This can be fixed by logging off, and then logging back in.

    Chunk Error

    Main article: Chunk Error

This happens most commonly in multiplayer, but all errors are client-side only. The server is not at fault for this. Falling into a missing chunk can cause the player to die just like falling through Bedrock. The damage rate is the same as Lava. Throwing Items into the chunk error will make the items unable to be obtained if one is on single player, but in multiplayer, one can reload the server and retrieve their items.

    Server Administration

The Window GUI of the Server Application allows one to type in Commands to administer their server. The server admins can "OP" players to give them administrative permissions. This allows them to access the commands by adding the prefix / before the command.

    Mini-games

On Console Edition, the server can be set to host a mini-game. Currently, the options are:

    • Tumble Mode
    • Glide Mini Game
    • Battle Mode
